Matrescence: the psychological and physical transformation of becoming a mother.
Coined in the 1970s by anthropologist Dana Raphael, matrescence describes the profound transformation a woman undergoes when becoming a mother — emotionally, physically, hormonally, socially, and spiritually. It is to motherhood what adolescence is to adulthood: a messy, liminal, identity-shifting threshold.
But unlike adolescence, it’s rarely spoken of. Which is why so many women feel confused by how deeply they’re changed — not just by birth, but by the becoming that follows.
